A recent interior finishing project in Bearspaw called for precision spray application across a complex built-in bunk bed system with shelving and integrated storage. The homeowner requested a three-tone finish—white, blue, and walnut stain—to distinguish each functional area while maintaining a cohesive, high-end look.
We were contracted to complete the work using professional-grade spray systems and durable coatings suited for fine residential millwork. The job took five days to complete and was priced at $5,000. All work was performed onsite, including prep, masking, stain work, and topcoat application, with strict attention to clean lines, even coverage, and long-term durability.
Background Story
Brennan contacted us after struggling to find a painter who could meet the level of precision needed for this complex millwork project. The bunk beds had already been built, and while the carpentry was excellent, the surfaces were still raw. Brennan didn’t want brush strokes or roller texture—he wanted a smooth, factory-grade spray finish that would look like built-to-order furniture.
He was also aiming for a distinct visual separation between sleeping areas, storage, and accent shelving, which required exact masking and multiple finish types applied in layers. Other painting companies had offered conventional hand-painted solutions, but Brennan wanted more than a basic coating—he wanted cabinetry-quality results.
After reviewing our portfolio and process, Brennan chose [company] based on our experience with custom spray applications in high-end residential interiors. He later shared photos of the finished project on the Bearspaw community Facebook page, which led to additional inquiries.
Scope of Services
- Initial Consultation & Color Planning: Met with the homeowner to evaluate the built-in structure and finalize the design plan for a three-tone finish. Discussed durability requirements, sheen preferences, and coating sequence to avoid overspray or bleed-through.
- Surface Prep & Masking: Lightly sanded all wood surfaces to remove mill glaze and dust. Filled minor gaps and seams where needed. Taped off adjoining surfaces with precision to allow for clean separation between white, blue, and walnut-stained sections.
- Base Coat Application – White & Blue Areas: Applied multiple coats of Benjamin Moore Advance in both white and custom blue to bunk frames, drawer faces, and vertical partitions. Sprayed using fine-finish HVLP equipment for smooth, brush-free results.
- Stain Application – Walnut Accents: Hand-applied Old Masters Stain to wood accent shelving and cubby units. Used fine-grit scuff sanding between coats to ensure even tone and grain visibility.
- Topcoat Protection: Sprayed all stained sections with Renner Wood Coatings clear coat to lock in the color and provide a durable, satin-sheen finish that resists fingerprints and abrasion.
- Final Inspection & Touch-Ups: Performed a full walkthrough with Brennan to identify any touch-up needs. Verified clean tape lines, surface consistency, and sheen matching before project sign-off.
Paints/ Products Used
Benjamin Moore Advance (White and Blue): Used on all bunk frames, storage drawers, and vertical panels. Chosen for its enamel-hard finish and spray-friendly formula for brush-free application.
Old Masters Stain (Walnut): Applied to exposed wood shelving and accent details. Selected for its rich pigment and compatibility with clear protective topcoats.
Renner Wood Coatings Clear Coat: Used as a final finish on all stained areas. Provides long-lasting surface protection without altering the stain color or clarity.
3M Tape & Masking Film: Used throughout to protect surfaces during multi-step spraying.
HVLP Spray System: Employed for all paint and clear coat applications to ensure smooth, even coverage with minimal overspray.
Results
The final result was a furniture-grade finish that met the client’s expectations for quality and detail. The three-tone palette created clear separation between functional zones, while the satin clear coat over the walnut stain gave the wood depth without glare.
All surfaces were smooth to the touch with no brush marks, roller texture, or visible overspray. Color transitions were clean and crisp. Brennan didn’t leave a formal review, but he shared photos on the Bearspaw community Facebook group, commenting on the finish quality and professional handling of a multi-stage job.
The custom bunk beds are now a standout feature in the home—visually elevated by the kind of spray finish normally reserved for high-end cabinetry.
