Windows Trim Painting

Windows Trim Painting

There is so much you can do with your windows trim, depending on the type of material your trim is made of. Most new windows trim are made of MDF or wood. The older style that was popular in Calgary is the golden oak wooden window trim. Depending on our client’s preference or the nature of the project, we determinate if it’s best to spray or brush the windows trim. Nowadays, with the technology and innovation of the new products and brushes, we are able to brush the trim with the proper application methods. It will allow us to minimize the brush marks to almost none with a paint that levels out beautifully.

Oakwood Windows Trim

If you have the golden oak wooden windows trim and want to make it look more modern and newer then we can help! It is very important to properly do the surface preparation and use the right product when it comes to painting your oak wood trim. Let’s take a look at how our team of experts execute the job.

Step one

We start by cleaning and wiping any dirty woodwork with a degreaser or a friendly environment cleaner.

Step two

Sand the windows trim with 120 grit sandpaper of premium quality. Sand old paint so the new paint can adhere. Sand bare wood to remove raised grain, level off wood filler, and ease over sharp edges.

Tip:

  • Make sure to hold the sandpaper sheet in a position that it will get into all corners and areas where the grain of the wood is more raised.
  • Change your sandpaper when you feel that it has lost its efficiency and grit. This will help get the task done faster.

Step 3

On profiled moldings we use a soft sanding block or sanding sponge that conforms to the shape of the molding. Take care not to let the sandpaper touch glass; it will leave scratches.

When the sanding is done, dust the woodwork with an old, worn brush or a shop vacuum. Then wipe it clean with a tack cloth.

Step 4

It’s time to prime! On oak wood we use an oil-based shellac primer to avoid any bleeding through. If the wrong primer is used you can end up with yellow spots everywhere on your windows trim, mostly where the grain of the wood is. Allow primer to dry overnight, then sand lightly with 220-grit sandpaper. We then clean up the dust with vacuum and tack cloth before applying final coats

Step 5

We will caulk all the joints and gaps with a high-quality caulking that will not crack overtime. We use a dripless caulking gun and to wipe the caulking smooth we use the wet sponge technique. We use techniques and tools to achieve a clean look.

Step 6

It’s now time to paint your oak wood windows trim to make them look new and trendier.

Fixing your windows trim that are peeling & blistering

When your windows sill is peeling or the paint is blistering that might indicate that you have a windows problem. Like most case it is because you have some condensation on the inside of your windows. That condensation will turn into water that will leak down and sit on your windows sill. It is often the reason why your windows trim ends up peeling. To determinate the problem we recommend to get your windows look at by a professional then fixing what causes the problem before we start restoring your windows trim. When we fix your windows sills will look like new but it’s not an easy job and it can take several hours of labour. Restoring your windows is very delicate work that take a lot of patience, it also involves being really careful to not scratch the glass and that’s why our team make sure to mask the glass to protect it. Our professional painters will start by scraping any loose paint that is peeling, they will then sand it starting with 80 grit sand paper to finish with smoother 180/220 grit. We will prime with the appropriate primer any bare wood and area we worked on. We will apply caulking where is necessary to seal any joint or gaps that air or moisture could enter in. We finally finish by painting 2 coat of premium trim paint.
